Geering up, FuturePLAY and the Vancouver School Board (VSB) are partnering up to provide educators with a pro-d opportunity focused on incorporating engineering design activities in the classroom! In this exciting pro-d, we will be diving into the engineering design cycle and exploring its pedagogy and connections to BC’s ADST curriculum through fun, engaging, and hands-on activities that educators will be able to use in their classrooms to help create the connection between science and society.   


Proposed schedule for the day - April 26 

9:00-9:10         Introductions / Why teach engineering

9:10-9:40         Unplugged Coding Activities: Origami 

      • Importance of Sequence, decomposition etc. 

9:40-10:40 Intro to coding: Scratch / Scratch Jr. 
      • Beginner and advanced option
      • (With beginner or K-3 and intermediate or 4-9 options) 
10:40-10:50 Break 

10:50-11:20 Activity: Example of an Engineering Design Challenge

      • Cat In a Tree 
      • Extensions 

11:20-11:30 Assessment Strategies for Engineering Challenges 

      • Including constraints for implementing 

11:30-12:30 Lunch
12:30-1:10 Design your own engineering design challenge
1:10-1:30         Sharing & Discussion

1:30- 2:00 Conclusions, Fun Stuff, Future Workshops
