Media literacy offers an exciting approach to modern education, but where does one start? How does one manage the inevitable challenges that arise when bringing our students' problematic online world into the classroom? This session will offer frank discussions and practical approaches we will practice together, along with tools and resources you can use immediately.
Examining the ways that we are swayed by modern persuasive techniques and psychological strategies that tap into our cognitive biases, we'll explore advertising in both its most traditional and its most creative, current forms. We'll analyze the impact of social media platforms and online realities that engross children and youth deeply and, at times, completely. We'll also take time to dive into the ways that project-based media literacy can be applied to any subject area, building critical and creative thinking skills. This session is a starting point; here we'll discuss where you can go with media literacy, and how you can get there.
