Framing Empowering Math Questions and Tasks with Laura Gini-Newman of TC2 (Gr 9-12)
Empowerment is the process of enabling every student to learn mathematics in a way that strengthens both their math learning and confidence. How we frame learning opportunities for our students affects the degree to which they are empowered. Questions and tasks that are reasoning-focused provide an intuitive framework for creating personalized authentic learning opportunities that place learning decision-making power in the hands of each student. In this approach learners learn to think while they think to learn math, and become the heart of the curriculum, bringing it to life in ways that matter to their learning the most. Come to this session to learn how to frame reasoning-focused questions and tasks by exploring grade-specific examples designed to empower all math students.
Laura Gini-Newman began consulting with TC² after a diverse career as a classroom and university educator, consultant, coach, and textbook and curriculum writer. She has worked with teachers in Canada, the US, and around the world highlighting the significant role of sustained critical inquiry in mathematics in empowering all students to become independent, self-regulated learners who understand the societal value of mathematics. In 2017, Laura was awarded the Karen LaRone Hidden Hero Educator Award and has trained as a facilitator through the ICA Associates Inc. and Adaptive Schools. She has presented widely on the topics of critical thinking, inquiry, assessment, instruction, school success planning, multiple intelligences and brain research.
